Ioways at Carlisle Indian School
"I will say something about my tribe to which I belong: They
used to live in camp and hunt.. They did not work, but hunted.
They had no homes, they camp from place to place. At last they
had an agent to take charge of them, and that time they lived in
camp yet, but a very few years ago they thought it would be good
for them to work and live in houses; so now they all live in
houses and have farms. They raise their own food, some wheat,
plant potatoes, and everything that is good to each; they raise
their own. But half the tribe packed up their things and went to
Indian Territory two or three years ago. They were affraid of the
white people. They said, "They white people all around us; we are
in a pen, after while they will drive us out of our place, and we
would starve to death." So they ask the agent to sell out; but
the other half said, "We will not sell out, we will stay here."
So they separated the tribe. They started without permission.
Nobody ever know where they are. I guess wherever they are, they
camp from place to place this day. The best they they could do
would be to go back to Nebraska and stay there as the other half
did. Those who are at home don't care if they are in a "pen,"
fenced in by white people. They look ahead and send their
children to school."

The (Carlisle Indian Industrial) School News
February 1882
The School news, at the Ioway Indian School, was a monthly started in 1880. A few years
later, they switched to a weekly.
The first reference to the
Ioway cames in the third issue, dated August 1880, when Iowa
student Josie Vettor wrote about an excursion some students took
to Harrisburg, crossing the great Susquehanna River along the
way. "We could see the bottom of the river," Josie wrote. "In
Nebraska we can not see the bottom of the river when it is deep,
for it is so muddy; here we could see stones in the river."
Samuel Townsend, a Pawnee, was the editor of those first
papers. He was succeeded by Charles Kihega, who became editor in
August 1881.
Of course, it's hard to know how much editing (and even
writing) the Indian students did. Colonel Pratt, Carlisle's
founder, exerted a great deal of editorial influence, especially
in these early papers. Almost every issue includes an essay about
how important it is for students to learn English, even if that
means forgetting their native tongues, talking about the
importance of work and farming instead of hunting, etc. Certainly
some of these things are the thoughts and feelings of the Indian
students, but it's all seen through the filter of Pratt's
philosophy.
